It has been said that Detroit has the best fireworks in the nation. Since I am a native Detroiter, I can vouch that Detroit puts on an AWSOME display. In fact, it is one of our highlights of the year. I personally almost always attend the fireworks and have watched them from just about every angle. So, if you come to Detroit to see our fireworks I will tell you the best seats to watch them from.
My personal favorite is Hart Plaza up close and personal. This seat is for the brave at heart. When you first come to hart plaza the entrance may be very crowded but if you and your party form a body chain and make your way to the water front, you’ll find that the crowd will open up and you will have a comfortable spot to lay out a blanket to watch the fireworks. Most people will not try to pass through the crowd. Watching the fireworks from hart plaza water front is; Take It In Your Face! You experience the patriotic music, the thunder, the vibrations, the roaring crowd and the ashes of the fireworks descending upon you. You also become a witness to millions of people turn into one body as one part my yell “Taste Great” and the other half yell “Less Filling” or “Oooooo” and “Aaaaaa”. This seat is not recommended for small children.
My second best place to watch the fireworks is Belle Isle. This seat is recommended for families and small children but you must get there early. The best time to get a good spot is early morning. So pack up your camping gear and picnic favorites and make a day of it. This is really exhilarating to watch Belle Isle transform into the largest camp ground ever.
My least favorite place is in a room in the Renaissance center. You would think that because the fireworks are in front of the Renaissance building that would be the perfect spot. In fact, it’s the opposite. You only have a window view so you don’t see all the fireworks; you only see the fireworks that reach the window height. Any fireworks below or above you can’t see. Plus you miss out on all the hoop-la, patriotic music etc… because the room is pretty much sound proof.
